Today I am reading an essay by Ella Shohat and Robert Stam for my film theory course so that I can write a response paper for the film we watched this week. They focused on realism and ethnocentric ideals in the film production industry. Their writing is very self indulgent and hard to get through, because their focus is less on communication as it is on coming off as an academic. This seems to be the bane of all film theory writers as their profession is not respected as a true field of study worthy of attention in the academic community. That being said, I am very tired of seeing essays which should take 5-10 pages of writing being written in double and sometimes triple that amount. And these essays are abridged! Anyway, it took s good deal of effort to take the time to get through these readings.
